Abstract:

The main goal of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the TV program Galli Galli Sim Sim (GGSS) on children's educational readiness, health and hygiene, and emotional well-being. GGSS is the Indian co-production of Sesame Street. Since 2006, Galli Galli Sim Sim has been working to bring early childhood education to children throughout India. The show incorporates a curriculum focused on literacy, numeracy, health and safety, and emotional development. In Lucknow, low-income private pre-schools will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: a control, low exposure and high exposure group. All groups will see children’s television programming for 24 minutes a day, five days a week. The control group will see 30 different episodes of children’s television programming; the low exposure group will see 12 episodes of GGSS and 18 episodes of other children’s TV programming; and the high exposure group will see 30 complete episodes of GGSS. The intervention will last 12 weeks. Data will be collected from all the children (approximately 2000) before, immediately after, and three months following the intervention.

Intervention Overview

Intervention:

The main goal of this study is to assess the effectiveness of the children's TV program Galli Galli Sim Sim (GGSS) on child developmental outcomes among low-income children in India. GGSS is a TV show which includes a curriculum focusing on literacy, numbers, health, and nutrition education. The intervention involves young children watching TV in preschool settings. We are exploring the effect of GGSS, in comparison to other children’s programs, on developmental outcomes. The RCT will have three groups: high exposure, low exposure, and control. Children in the high exposure group will watch 30 episodes of GGSS. Children will watch the episodes of GGSS during six weeks (first phase) and for the next six weeks following the midline survey (second phase). Children in the low-exposure group will see 12 episodes of GGSS and 18 episodes of other children’s programming (eg. Doraemon); children will watch two episodes of GGSS a week, and in the remaining three days, the other child’s programing. The control group will only see children’s programming but no episodes of GGSS. Children will watch the episodes in-school, as the intervention will be part of the school curriculum for 12 weeks.

Details of Evaluation Approach:

This Randomized Control Trial will be conducted in 100 schools with approximately 20 children in each school. At baseline, all children will be surveyed (one-on-one) where they will be assessed in terms of literacy, numeracy, health and safety, and emotional development. Then the schools will be randomized into 3 groups: high exposure, low exposure, and control. All children will view around24 minutes of children’s television a day (during the school day). Data collection will occur at baseline, after 6 weeks, after 12 weeks, and 3 months later.

Outcomes (Endpoints):

The outcomes of interest of this evaluation consist of literacy, numeracy, health and safety, and socio-emotional development.

We are aiming to recruit approximate 100 schools. There will be around 30-35 schools in each intervention arm. We expect that there will be 15-20 children in each school participating in this study.

Description:

Data will be primarily collected with children participating in the intervention at four points: baseline, midline (at 6 weeks), post-intervention and three-months following the intervention. The survey will be developed by the research team in coordination with in-country partners. We will obtain clearance from the University of Maryland’s Institutional Review Board.
