Abstract:

The purpose of this longitudinal study is to examine the impact of natural viewing of Galli Galli Sim Sim (GGSS) on Indian children's educational readiness, health and hygiene, and emotional well-being. GGSS is the Indian co-production of Sesame Street. Since 2006, GGSS works to bring early childhood education to children throughout India. While controlling for demographics and developmental changes, this research will explore whether exposure to GGSS influences outcomes related to five early childhood education domains: literacy, numeracy, social and emotional skills, knowledge of nutrition, health and hygiene, and knowledge of targeted protective behavior. We recruited 1,107 child and parent pairs (n=2,214 participants altogether) in two urban and two peri-urban settings in three locations: Lucknow, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. We target children ages of 3 to 5 years old (and parents) from the low end of the middle socio-economic groups. Participants will complete paper-and-pencil questionnaires collected through one-on-one interviews at the participant home. Data collection will consist of baseline, six-month, 12-month, two-year, and three-year follow-up and occur over 2015-2018.

Intervention

Intervention Overview

Intervention:

There is no prescribed intervention here as the main goal of this study is to examine the impact of natural exposure of GGSS on child developmental outcomes among low-income children in India. Over the course of three years, children and parents will answer paper-and-pencil questionnaires collected through one-on-one interviews at the participant home.

Method Details

Details of Evaluation Approach:

This longitudinal study will be conducted with 1,107 child and parent pairs over the course of four years. At each time point (baseline, six-month, 12-month, two-years, and three-years follow-up), children will be assessed in terms of literacy, numeracy, health and safety, and emotional development. They will also report on their viewership of the TV show GGSS. Data will be collected on whether they watch the show and the viewership frequency. Controlling for demographics and developmental changes, this research will explore whether exposure to GGSS influences outcomes related to early childhood education domains by comparing those with different levels of exposure to GGSS.

Outcomes (Endpoints):

The outcomes of interest of this study consist of literacy, numeracy, health and safety, and socio-emotional development.

Unit of Analysis:
Individual
Hypotheses:

The primary hypotheses being tested is that natural exposure to Galli Galli Sim Sim effects the literacy, numeracy, health and safety, and socio-emotional development of Indian preschool children.
