Abstract:

Lay-responders such as traffic police officers play an important role in assisting road traffic injured victims, especially where formal pre-hospital care system is non-existent. Generally previous studies have shown that lay responders in these settings lack first aid knowledge and skills. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a trauma first aid course in improving the knowledge and skills of traffic police officers. The course will be conducted with141 Tanzanian traffic police officers. A pretest-posttest design will be used. A trauma first aid course will consist of 16 hours session. Changes in outcome measures (knowledge and skills) at baseline, immediate post-intervention and a six months follow-up will be analyzed using a repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) also Cohen’s d effect size will be calculated.

Intervention

Intervention Overview

Intervention:

The intervention focuses on imparting knowledge and skills to lay responders (traffic police) in managing injured victims at the scene and on the way to the hospital. The course was developed in accordance with WHO guidelines for provision of basic first aid. To facilitate learning the training will be spread into two sessions, each session comprising about 27 participants and running for 8 hrs, Participants will be required to attend all two sessions. Topics that will be covered during the training are; scene survey, provider safety and initial patient assessment, these will be conducted as lectures and discussions in a large group. Through demonstration and role plays, participants will be taught how to manage; compromised airway and breathing, external bleeding, fractures of extremities and head and neck injuries. Furthermore participants will be divided into small groups of 8 t0 10 for hand-on practice on skills stations using mannequin, the themes will be opening compromised airway, breathing assessment and recovery position. This activity will contributed to more than 50% of the entire session so that every participant actively participate.
